So let’s get back to basics here. The first step to taking care of yourself, is loving yourself. And all of us need reminders of the love we feel for ourselves! So here’s your practice today, sparked by the always enlightening Matt Kahn. Place your hand over your heart chakra (just below your collar bone, in the centre of your chest) and put your other hand on top. Take a deep breath in, and as you exhale say “I love you.” Take in another breath, and on the exhale say, “I love you.” Set a timer and do this for 5 minutes. Become aware of any thoughts and/or feelings you may have during this exercise, without judgement. Feel them as they come, and allow them to move through you and on. Deep breath in, “I love you,” and complete your exhale… I love you…

The “I Love You” exercise opens the gateway to you loving you. To go to the next step though, I’m going to ask you: how do you feel loved? The 5 Love Languages is a fascinating discussion of how we relate to one another, and how we feel valued particularly in an intimate relationship. I encourage you to read this brief synopsis of this concept (if you don’t already know what your language is) to understand how you want to be loved.

Because, the most intimate relationship you will ever have is with yourself.

Loving yourself as you want to be loved will allow you to know that you are loved, because you are giving this love in a way that your spirit recognizes and receives. And as you connect with yourself in the way your soul appreciates and longs for, you create a space for you to feel cared for, valued and accepted.  Which is exactly what self love is all about.
