Starting out as an intuitive can be a daunting, even scary, experience. Here are 11 things to keep in mind as you begin your journey and strengthen your intuitive capacity.

1. You have to trust
Following your intuition, and then sharing your guidance and information with others, is a huge act of trust. You trust others with this vulnerable side of you because when the act of using your intuition is new to you, you expect those you share it with to think you’re crazy (or at least weird!).

Also, you’re trusting yourself – that you are receiving guidance and messages correctly, and you have to trust the Spirits and Guides you are working with.

The good news is trust is just like a muscle. As you exercise it, it gets bigger and stronger.

2. Keep yourself grounded
Receiving and delivering messages is high-vibration work, and it’s easy to get stuck in the higher reaches.

The trouble here is that it’s not always possible to get the mundane tasks of life accomplished when you are on an energetic high.

Keep your two feet flat on the floor while working, and if your hands aren’t holding cards all the time, be sure to rub your palms on the tops of your thighs to stay connected to your physical self.

3. You are always in control
You decide when and how to receive your messages. You set your intention, you protect yourself, and you ground yourself, too.

In the beginning, it’s a good idea to create a little ritual for yourself: I used to light candles on an altar space in my office and take a moment of prayer with my Guides and whatever Ascended Masters I felt I should be working with at that time. This was my cue to the Universe that I am open for business. And that is the only time that I am receiving messages.

If at any time you feel yourself getting information you don’t want or you aren’t prepared for, strengthen your protections and say, “Go away. You are not welcome at this time.” No politeness, no platitudes… You’re not asking: you are in charge.

4. Always protect yourself
One of the most important things about being an intuitive is knowing how to keep yourself safe, so that you are in charge of how and when information flows to you.

There are all kinds of energies on the planet and we walk through what I call “energy bombs” all the time. For instance, when someone has had a fight and you end up in that room, you yourself feel a little agitated.

If you are protected, you will be less likely to be affected by these experiences.

5. Get their permission
This one is one of the most important parts of developing your intuition and stepping into the role of a Messenger for the Other Side: you must always ask for permission before you deliver a message.

Just as you don’t want to be bossed around by Spirits delivering messages whenever they have something to say, people don’t always want to receive messages, either.

If you want the Other Side to respect you, then you must model the respect you require to those on this side. (Of course, your clients have already given you their permission if they have booked an appointment with you.)

If you are chatting with a friend and you feel the familiar nudge of your Guides, ask if she is willing to hear a message before you continue to speak.

6. No editing the message
This is really the hardest part. You feel like you’re getting information and you take the words and put your spin on it.

The problem is that when you do this, it becomes your message, not Spirit’s, and as such it is not as helpful to the person receiving it.

Train yourself to describe exactly what you are seeing, hearing and/or feeling, and watch amazement and understanding bloom on your client’s face.

If you’re really unsure, you can say things like, “I don’t know if this is going to make sense for you, but this is what they are telling me.” And then deliver the message. Remember, you are not the letter writer; you are the letter carrier.

7. You can’t remember the messages
The hardest part when you’re an intuitive is that you don’t know what you’re saying when you are delivering messages. You want to know so that you can tell people about your experience, but the messages are not for you.

Think of it like the mail: mail carriers aren’t allowed to read your mail; they can only deliver it to your mailbox. This is the same thing. (Although, it’s really great when your clients call you to say, “It went exactly as you said it would!”)

In the beginning, you might want to remember the messages. If this happens to you, remind yourself, “Nope, that’s not my mail.”

8. Centre yourself in the knowledge you are doing your best
It’s okay for you to have parameters around yourself. Know what you are willing to do and how much time you are willing to spend, and stay centred in your right to have a life outside of being a messenger.

Remember, too, you are not responsible for what people do with the information you give them, or the way they react to what they hear.

You know you are always doing your best, whether they want to receive the messages you have for them.

9. Respect
Receiving Divine intervention in your life really is a blessing. Be sure that you are treating it as such, because if you start treating it like a parlour trick, then your ego becomes involved in the process, and that always makes your Guides harder to hear.

This same respect must be extended to your clients, as well; respect their privacy and know that as a messenger your commitment to confidentiality is of paramount importance.

10. There must be an exchange
In life, everything is an exchange. As such, there must be an exchange for delivering messages. If you agree to answer questions for someone, then they must give you something in return.

This does not need to be money; it could be a meal, child care or a pair of hand-knitted socks!

You are giving of yourself and your connection, and the receiver of the message must give you something in return to derive the most benefit from the experience.

11. Practice makes you better
Just like any muscle, as you flex and train and push yourself, you will get better.

In time and with practice, it gets easier to trust, protect yourself, keep yourself grounded and deliver messages as you practice your technique.

Be gentle with yourself along the way, and do not expect too much of yourself right away. This will develop and evolve over time as you do, and as you experience what it feels like to be connected to the Divine in this way.

And your life will never again be the same.
